Trains & Rolling Stock

Trains are fairly simple mammoth transport machines but they still need a regular maintenance schedule. Today, rolling stock is maintained through a triple system based either on time (length of use or service), mileage travelled or the signs of wear and tear on the equipment. The last one mentioned is condition monitoring which inspects parts of the train and its rolling stock for damage after a certain pre-set limit. The concept is “if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it” and apply this to train maintenance.

Checking is easily done by on-board monitoring as well as using computer data gathered in a database at the home station. A train has many moving parts that require regular replacement. The complex mechanical and electrical systems require regular checking to make sure everything is safe. Trains are two types: passenger or cargo (freight). For passenger trains, safety is paramount as lives are involved. Cars attached to locomotives can be classified into either non- revenue or revenue load.
