The transportation industry has many sub-sectors that require some form of specialised training and skills. For example, there are different training modes for drivers of flatbed, tanker or container trucks. Another is employment in the different modes of transport such as aviation, shipping and the railways. It is often necessary to put up specialised schools that offer these types of training while at the same time serve as a manpower supply pool for these industries.

The shipping industry, in particular, is one of the most stringent in putting up maritime schools where ship captains and other ship officers are recruited. A single cargo ship is very expensive to buy and even more expensive to operate so ship owners are justified in hiring only people who are properly trained. The aviation industry is also one sector where pilots operate very expensive aircraft and everyone on board must be certified.
