Shipyards
Shipyards are places where ships such as yachts, cruise liners and passenger ships were built or initially constructed. These yards are usually located by the sea or by tidal rivers to allow easy access for ships. The history of ship building can be traced back to the ancient times, with the earliest shipyards noted to be built around 2400 BC in Lothal, India. But shipyards only started to proliferate in the 20th century, particularly during the periods of world war, in which shipyards provide tremendous contributions in the war efforts of the Allied Forces. The end of the war leaves many shipyard workers jobless, but the trade of shipbuilding continues. Many of today’s shipyards were designed to accommodate both shipbuilding and ship repairing, merging their roles with the dockyards, which function was associated more with ship maintenance and basing.
