Horse Transport
Before the first automotive vehicle was introduced in the early 1800s, horses and horse-drawn carriages were the most popular mode transportation around the world. And now, as the 21st-century world is experiencing the crunch of rising oil prices and the negative environmental impact of automobile pollution, environmentalists and environment-conscious leaders are pitching the use of horses as alternatives to transportation. Can you imagine a horde of horses and horse carriages running on the busy streets of New York and Paris? Looks like we will be going back to the old time. But seriously, horses can be a good alternative to automobile transportation in towns and rural areas. The idea might not work well in high traffic highways and busy urban roads, but it certainly has a potential in communities with low vehicle traffic. In fact, over 70 towns in France are currently using horse-powered vehicles as replacements for gasoline- and diesel-powered service vehicles. With the fuel crisis facing the world today, transportation alternative such as horse, should be considered by decision makers in the development of sustainable and efficient transportation system.
